Car collides with commuter train; 1 person airlifted

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A Sprinter commuter train collided with a Volkswagen car in Oceanside Monday morning, causing one person to be airlifted to a hospital with traumatic injuries, according to police.

The collision, in the 2600 block of Temple Heights Drive, happened at 8:35 a.m., Oceanside Police Lt. Karen Laser said. According to investigators, the train was heading west at about35 mph when the engineer saw the the car drive southbound on Temple Heights Drive and stop on the tracks. The engineer applied the train’s emergency brakes and sounded the horn but could not stop the train from hitting the car.

The driver was badly injured, but no one on the train was hurt. Sprinter service in the area was halted duringĀ  the investigation.

It was not immediately known why the driver stopped on the train tracks.
