ESCONDIDO, Calif. — Two Escondido men who allegedly beat and shot a 31-year-old man over the weekend are behind bars facing several charges Monday, including attempted murder, torture and aggravated mayhem.

Edgar Bueno Pacheco, 27, and Oscar Bueno Pacheco, 21, whose relationship was not immediately disclosed, were arrested as detectives were investigating the attack in the vicinity of the 3000 block of North Broadway late Saturday night, Escondido police Lt. Justin Murphy said.

The victim was left with “multiple injuries to his head, consisting of blunt force trauma and a gunshot,” Murphy said. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery, but an update on his condition has not been released.

Police did not immediately disclose what may have led to the attack or what followed, but both suspects also face charges of carjacking and vehicle theft, according to online jail records.

There was some initial confusion as to whether the assault took place in the city of Escondido or in an unincorporated area to the north and sheriff’s detectives were first sent to investigate. It was later determined the crime occurred within city limits, Murphy said.
