2 injured when flames engulf car on freeway

A Dodge Challenger burst into flames on state Route 52 Sunday night.

SANTEE, Calif. — Two people suffered burns when the car they were in caught fire on the freeway Sunday night.

Fire crews extinguished the burning Dodge Challenger on state Route 52 nearMast Boulevard  just after 10 p.m., but the car was destroyed.

The driver told officials that he pulled over on the side of the freeway when he saw smoke coming from the engine compartment. He opened the hood and flames shot out, burning him and his passenger. The fire quickly spread to the interior of the car and engulfed the vehicle.

The driver and passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor burns.
