SAN DIEGO -- A University City apartment complex and nearby residents were evacuated for nearly two hours Thursday night while crews investigated a report of toxic gas.

Shortly before 8 p.m., police received a call from the Axiom La Jolla apartments located on Mahaila Avenue near Regents Road. Visitors told police they came to visit a friend and when they let themselves in the apartment, they read a note on a bedroom door warning them to stay away due to poisonous gas.

No gas or other chemicals were detected. Police said a woman's body was found in the apartment.

An investigation is underway.
