LA MESA – A cab driver was hospitalized after being stabbed by a passenger when he stopped at a gas station in La Mesa, police said.

The driver told investigators that he picked up a fare but began feeling uneasy about the passenger, so he pulled into a Shell gas station in the 3800 block of Massachusetts Avenue at about 11:45 p.m. and got out of the cab. He said the passenger came up behind him and stabbed him in the chest with some kind of weapon.

The passenger ran off westbound on Waite Drive before police arrived.

The driver was taken to a local hospital and treated for a 1-inch laceration on his chest, authorities said. His wound was not life-threatening.

The driver's description of the passenger was vague. It was not immediately known where the driver picked up the man or where he was going before the cab stopped.
