Antoinette “Toni” Isabelle, better known in the roller derby world as Toni Rockalicous, was in the back seat of a Nissan sedan that had pulled to the side of the freeway near Fallbrook so the driver could set up a blue tooth music connection. At that moment a Lanciar IV singe engine plane smashed into the back of the car, killing Isabelle and injuring three of her teammates.
“When I heard the news I couldn’t believe it. Not Toni… no no no,” said long-time friend Jennifer Hubbard.
Isabelle was killed Saturday while she and her friends were on their way to a roller derby event in the San Fernando Valley.
The 62-year-old pilot was rushed to the hospital for facial surgery and a 50-year-old woman passenger in the plane was also treated for lacerations to the neck.
Isabelle’s death has emotionally crippled the roller derby community and skaters have raised 16,000 dollars on a gofundme campaign to pay for her funeral service.
“I just wish I could hug her and tell her I love her,” said Hubbard.
