Fire rips through Serra Mesa apartment

SAN DIEGO -- Firefighters extinguished an apartment fire Thursday night in Serra Mesa.

The blaze at 3485 Ruffin Road, Village Glen Apartment Homes, was reported around 8:30 p.m. and was under control in about 15 minutes.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one unit, the resident of which was not home at the time and will be helped by American Red Cross.

Much of the damage could be seen on the roof of the unit.

Nearby residents were able to return to their homes by 10 p.m.

The cause of the fire was not yet known.
