SAN DIEGO — Antonio Gates, eight-time Pro Bowl tight end and all-time leading receiver for the Chargers, signed a contract with the team for two more seasons, the team announced Wednesday.

Over his pro career, which began in 2003, Gates has scored multiple touchdowns in 21 games — the most by any tight end in NFL history, the Chargers said.

Gates will go into  his 14th NFL season with 844 career catches and 104 touchdown catches. He needs seven more touchdown receptions to  tie Tony Gonzalez for No. 6 in career touchdown catches.
