Alleged Mexican cartel kingpin extradited to San Diego
SAN DIEGO – A man accused of being a top drug trafficker in Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel is in San Diego after being extradited from Mexico.
Victor Emilio Cazares Gastellum was arrested four years ago as part of a huge U.S. investigation into the Sinaloa cartel, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Cazares is believed to be related to the cartel’s leader, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. He was allegedly in charge of moving cocaine from Colombia to cities across the U.S., according to the Times.
Cazares may be open to a plea bargain to avoid a multi-year wait for a trial, according to his San Diego-based attorney, Jan Ronis. Important drug trafficking suspects like Cazares are often placed in solitary confinement at the San Diego downtown jail while awaiting trial, the Times reported.
