CARLSBAD, Calif. — A man who prompted a SWAT standoff when he refused to come out of a home filled with firearms was later found dead, authorities said Thursday.

Someone called police shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday to report a suicidal man with a gun in a residential area along Whitman Way near Faraday Avenue, according to a Carlsbad police statement. Arriving officers attempted to talk to him, but he retreated to his nearby residence.

Officers learned shortly afterward that the man had several guns in his possession. They evacuated surrounding homes and requested a SWAT response, authorities said.

SWAT personnel tried numerous times to contact the man but were unsuccessful. They then entered the home and found the man’s body, along with multiple guns, police said in the statement.

The man’s name was withheld pending family notification.
