SAN DIEGO -- A Santee man quietly stood before a judge Thursday and pleaded not guilty to 12 charges, including statutory rape.

Patrick Wehrung, 25, was a youth gymnastics coach at Champion Gymnastics & Cheer in Santee. He allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl he coached.

Prosecutors say the two met at the gym and knew each other for several months and that they would go to La Jolla Shores where they had sex on four separate occasions.

“December 19 was the first incident – and there were three incidents in the month of January," said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.

Wehrung was arrested February 9 and then posted bail.

At his arraignment Thursday, Wehrung's bail was raised to $80,000. The judge ordered Wehrung back into custody and said he was a flight risk because he faces up to seven years in prison, if convicted.

Wehrung's preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 19.
