SAN DIEGO — A water main break in the Clairemont neighborhood forced authorities to close westbound Balboa Avenue in the area.

The ruptured pipe on Balboa Avenue alongside Interstate 5 did not leave anyone in the area without running water but closed the westbound lanes, according to city Public Utilities Department spokesman Arian Collins. A traffic alert was issued for the area and vehicles were beingĀ  diverted onto Morena Boulevard. Drivers could access the freeway via Clairemont Drive.

Westbound Balboa Avenue was expected to be reopened between 1 and 2 p.m., Collins said.

Collins said that since the water main is scheduled to be replaced in the near future, it would remain out of service instead of being repaired.
