SAN DIEGO – One person died after getting trapped underneath a downed tree in Pacific Beach Sunday afternoon, a fire captain said.

A giant tree was uprooted at Ingraham Street and Fortuna Avenue during a winter storm that moved through San Diego County Sunday. Three cars, one with a woman inside, were hit by the tree around 4 p.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Captain Joe Amador.

When firefighters were trying to get to the victim out of a small Honda sedan, crowds of Pacific Beach residents stood nearby watching.

No details about the victim were released.

Traffic was diverted from the area in both directions.

Due to the size of the tree, Amador said crews would probably have to remain on scene throughout the night.
