ESCONDIDO, Calif. — A 21-year-old driver was killed when his speeding minivan struck a tree off an Escondido roadway with such force it nearly split the vehicle in two, police said Tuesday.

The man apparently lost control of his 2006 Dodge Caravan while headed west on Country Club Lane at a high rate of speed around 7:30 p.m. Monday, according to an Escondido police statement. The minivan careened into a tree in the center median just west of Broadway.

“The vehicle impacted a tree with enough force that it was nearly torn in half,” police said in the statement.

The driver died at the scene and his name has yet to be released. Police said speed was a major factor in the crash, but it was unknown if alcohol was also involved.

Anyone with additional information on the crash was asked to call a police traffic investigator at (760) 839-4407.

What a horrible thing to say about such a young person! Their mother will read this! Talk about Cali ppl people like u always show how far from the Midwest I am! Rude! Fake! And heartless! My deepest condolences to this persons loved ones! We are all miracles to make it out of our youth when we think we’re 10 feet tall and bullet proof! God rest his soul!

Screw this guy, he’s an adult, adults know speed kills. Glad he’s dead, one less jerk on the road. Damn shame about that tree.

To the person who wrote they’re ok with another human dying…. I LOVE you. If I could see you right now I’d wrap my arms around you and hug you and kiss you and hold you until you feel loved. It’s clear to me you’ve not been loved the way you need and deserve. I love you.

I can’t believe someone would post something like that…. Still in shock. He at one point was someone’s baby. May you never suffer such a loss

Sorry to hear someone lost their life. However there is no way you get in that bad of an accident on that road unless you are driving EXTREMELY recklessly. I see some of these accidents on some of these Escondido roads and just shake my head wondering how the heck they managed to do that.
