EL CAJON, Calif. -- A 41-year-old man reported to authorities that he shot and killed his wife Friday at their home in unincorporated El Cajon, a sheriff's lieutenant said.

Hauati Faanunu called at 12:34 a.m. and reported that he had just shot his wife at their residence at 8202 Melrose Lane, said Lt. Kenn Nelson of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

“The caller stated he had just shot his wife,'' Nelson said.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Lakeside Substation “discovered a dead adult female with trauma to her upper body,'' Nelson said. “No one else was home.''

A short time later, Faanunu turned himself in at the El Cajon Police Department, Nelson said. Sheriff's deputies arrested him at the police station.

The couple's six children, ages 2 to 13, were taken to stay with nearby family.

The woman was identified by the medical examiner Saturday as Mary Katherine Faanunu, 34.

The medical examiner Saturday also completed an autopsy on Mary Faanunu.

“The cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide,'' the medical examiner said.

Anyone with further information about the incident is urged to call the Homicide Detail at 858-974-2321, after hours at 858-565-5200, or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
