POWAY, Calif. -- Investigators are trying to determine why a driver lost control of her car and slammed into a caged water valve, causing a rupture that sent water spewing high in the air.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was heading eastbound on Scripps Poway Parkway when she crashed her black Honda sedan into the center divider. The car spun around and continued backwards at high speed across the roadway until it launched up a hillside and landed on the protected water valve.

The woman was able to get out of the car on her own. She was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police were trying to determine if she was driving under the influence.

Eastbound Scripps Poway Parkway was closed for several hours but reopened in time for the morning commute.
