SAN DIEGO -- Two women were injured when the vehicle they were in drove off the third floor of a parking structure at Fashion Valley Mall Sunday evening.

The accident happened at a parking structure near Nordstrom on the north side of the mall at about 7:30 p.m. The car drove through a guard rail  and plunged about 40 feet, landing on its roof. The two women in the car were able to get out of the wreck on their own before paramedics arrived, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Both women were conscious and breathing when they arrived on scene. They were taken by ambulance to to Scripps Mercy Hospital. Authorities said neither had life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe the driver mistakenly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal while trying to park.
