A 33-year-old man from Escondido was driving a GMC pick-up westbound on the freeway west of state Route 125 when he lost control of the truck, which flipped and rolled several times before landing on its roof just before 5 a.m. A 31-year-old El Cajon man was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the cab. He died at the scene. The driver and a 32-year-old woman in the truck both suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital, the Heartland Fire Department said.
The CHP arrived on-scene around 5:30 a.m. and issued a Sig Alert during the accident investigation. The Mission Gorge on-ramp to the westbound SR-52 was closed for more than two hours during the Tuesday morning commute and traffic on Highway 52 backed up as drivers slowed to see what was happening.
A 12-pack of beer was found scattered at the crash scene, but the CHP said that alcohol was not a factor in the accident..
