OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A motorist ran a red light at an Oceanside intersection and caused a collision that severely injured three people in the other vehicle, authorities said Wednesday.

The collision at the intersection of state Route 76 and Rancho Del Oro Drive was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to Battalion Chief Greg deAvila of the Oceanside Fire Department. The victims’ vehicle overturned in the westbound lanes.

The driver who ran the red light was not injured in the crash. However, the man and two women in the other vehicle suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from the wreckage, deAvila said.

Two of the victims were taken to the Oceanside Airport, then flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in critical condition, according to the battalion chief. The third was taken to the same hospital by ambulance to be treated for her injuries.

It was unclear whether the driver who ran the red light was immediately cited or arrested in connection with the crash.
