SAN DIEGO -- The first of two public forums over a proposed name change got underway at the Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Paradise Hills Friday night.

Close to 100 people packed the school's auditorium to hear general information about the possible renaming, and also gave people the opportunity to ask questions and give their opinions on the matter.

The San Diego Unified School District facilitated the meeting. Alumni, teachers, parents and students were in attendance as well as Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.

Gonzalez proposed all public parks and buildings that are named after Commander Robert E. Lee be renamed, after this past summer's shooting rampage at a South Carolina church, which sparked controversy over the Confederate flag.

Gonalez says Commander Lee and the confederate flag represent hate and racism and new schools would consider Robert E. Lee be the name of its institution.

The Assemblywoman argues plenty has changed since the school was named back in the late 50's and it needs to e changed to something more appropriate and fitting for the school and the community.

The majority on hand at the meeting were against changing the name. Many spoke about Lee's history and pointed out his qualifications. Others argued that the school is a staple in their community.

The San Diego Unified School District will distribute surveys to the community and district for further discussion. The second public forum will be held Dec. 2.

Liberals always want to neutralize things. So I suppose we should get rid of all the Jefferson and Washington named schools, cause they were rebels. Its still about control when it comes to liberals wanting their way. They are babies whining all the time.

  • Better way to spend the boards time......

Wow! Gonzo wasted a lot of time! Instead of wasting time with a name change she should have taken the crusade to get solar and air conditioning installed that would have made a real improvement!

Nice diversion. What about the shitty apefirmative action principal over at Serra? He’s been harassing teachers for years? Why bring up this naming nonsense now?

Commander Robert E. Lee???….was he in the Navy??? Last time I looked Robert E Lee was a General in the Army. Somebody needs to do some research. I am glad to see that Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez doesn’t have anything better to do or any other pressing legislative issues – such as the water shortage – that she can devote her time to matters such as this. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, you need to get a life…….and that also goes for the San Diego Unified School District….don’t you have more pressing issues to deal with…..like maybe security upgrades for our schools???
