CORONADO, Calif. - A couple's anniversary celebrations ended abruptly Monday night when they ran their rented sailboat aground offshore not far from the Hotel del  Coronado, the Coronado Police Department said.

The man and his wife were celebrating their one-year anniversary when they crashed their sailboat, named "Indian Summer", onto a sandbar at 11:20 p.m. The man managed to get to shore and find help, during which time his wife remained on the boat while it was thrashed around by waves.

Police and lifeguards arrived and rescued the woman from the boat. No one was hurt.

A tugboat pulled the sailboat off the sandbar just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

It was unclear why the boat ran aground. Police were investigating to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
