OCEANSIDE, Calif. – Firefighters used the jaws of life to free a driver from his car after he rolled it down an embankment and into a tree in Oceanside, firefighters said.

Rescuers arrived at the crash on the west side of North Santa Fe Avenue and Mesa Avenue at 2:15 a.m. The driver’s car was upside down and wrapped around a tree at the bottom of the embankment.

It took about 40 minutes to free the man from the mangled wreckage. The man was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Trauma Center in critical condition.

North Santa Fe Avenue from Mesa Drive to Champlain Street remained blocked off throughout Tuesday morning during the investigation and clean up.
