SAN DIEGO -- A man in his 30s was stabbed to death early Thursday in the Encanto neighborhood.

The mortally wounded victim was found unconscious and not breathing in a dirt area off the 1100 block of Evelyn Street near 69th Street shortly after 3 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Police officers and medics attempted to revive the unidentified man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, San Diego police Lt. Mike Hastings said. He suffered at least one stab wound to his upper torso.

Hastings said investigators were working to determine what led up to the stabbing.
