LA MESA, Calif. – Firefighters worked to put out a vegetation fire behind an Albertson’s grocery store in La Mesa early Wednesday morning, Heartland Fire said.

Several trees burst into flames near the grocery store at 8920 Fletcher Parkway just after 2 a.m.

La Mesa police closed one lane on the off ramp of state Route 125 while fire crews were dousing  the flames.  A sprinkler control box and several irrigation valves were melted by the fire, causing water to start leaking.

No other buildings were threatened and it was unclear what started the blaze. No one was hurt.
