Wild day on Wall Street ends with Dow down 588 points

NEW YORK – Wall Street endured a wild ride Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average closing with a loss of 588.47 points, or down about 3.6%.

The drama followed volatility and major losses in markets worldwide as they responded to another big sell-off in China.

The blue-chip industrials had skidded as much as 1,089 points moments after the opening bell and cut its loss dramatically to about 115 before falling again.
