SAN DIEGO -- The Sweetwater Valley Little League won its opening game of the Little League World Series Friday, 14-2 over an entrant from Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The contest in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, was stopped in the fourth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Dante Schmid, who pitched three strong innings, opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the second frame. The team from the South Bay community of Bonita blasted five home runs in the third inning, including a grand slam by Nick Maldonado that pushed the lead to 9-0.

The game was played one day after the opening slate of contests was rained out.

The game was watched on television by numerous fans who gathered at the La Finca D'Adobea Mexican restaurant in Bonita including Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas.

“Who wouldn’t come out?  This is so much fun!” said Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas.

Mayor Salas says she’s so proud of the talent coming out of the Southbay.

“This is the Sweetwater Valley Little League but about half the kids are from the City of Chula Vista, and the other half are from Bonita so we share the joy together.” Said Mayor Salas. “Hard work, talent, great coaches, and supportive parents. That’s what it takes to get a winning team.”

Sweetwater Valley is 17-0 in its four tournaments, including outscoring its four opponents 50-22 in the West Regional to become the 11th team from San Diego County to qualify for the Little League World Series.

The South Bay all-stars will next face the Pearland West Little League from Texas on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 12 p.m. PT.

“I feel like they’re going to take it.” Said Team mom Jessica Muro. “Their heart their spirit everything’s out there. The coaches want it the kids want it. They’re due, we love it there is so much talent out there.  We’re so proud of them.  Everybody. The whole community.”

A viewing party will be held at the Sweetwater Valley Little League Field at 3321 Conduit Road in Bonita. The game will be broadcast on a 20-foot by 10-foot HD screen. Gates to the field will open at 10:30 a.m. Fans can bring chairs and blankets onto the field. Team merchandise will be sold and the field's snack bar will be open. Food trucks will donate proceeds to the team.
