LEMON GROVE, Calif. — An investigation was underway Friday into a shooting that left a few homes in Lemon Grove with bullet holes and area hospitals on the lookout for a possible victim.

Someone summoned deputies to the 3500 block of West Street near Broadway after hearing several gunshots shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Michelle McPhail. The caller told authorities a man had possibly been shot in his left hand and was hiding near a backyard shed.

Deputies checked three area homes for the possible victim but found no one, McPhail said. However, blood was found behind one residence, sheriff’s officials said.

Authorities asked area hospitals to notify them if someone shows up to be treated for a gunshot wound.

“The investigation is in the beginning stages,” McPhail said in a statement. “There is no one in custody at this time.”

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the sheriff’s department at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
