SAN DIEGO -- A possible hit-and-run collision at a City Heights intersection left four people hurt Friday afternoon, one seriously, authorities reported.

The wreck at 49th Street and University Avenue occurred shortly before 2 p.m., according to police.

One of at least two cars involved in the accident veered onto a sidewalk and hit a 15 and 14-year-old boy. The younger one suffered a severe injury to his left leg, Sgt. Ray Battrick said. Medics took the teens plus the driver and passenger of the car who hit the boys to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.

A fifth patient did not require hospital care, a fire department spokesman said.

The motorist whose car struck the teen also smashed into another vehicle in front of her. She told officers she had lost control because she was rear- ended by a driver who then fled, according to Battrick. Investigators were looking into her account, the sergeant said.

The accident left traffic lanes blocked at the road crossing through the mid-afternoon.
