A man walked up to a deputy, who had pulled over another driver at the Las Pulgas Road exit near Interstate 5, and said he committed a crime and was armed with a weapon, according the Highway Patrol.
The deputy requested "backup" and units from various agencies.
Orange County Sheriff's deputies, along with California Highway Patrol and Border Patrol agents, arrived to location around 1:15 p.m. to assist in the investigation.
CHP temporarily halted traffic on southbound I-5 near Las Pulgas Road to allow law enforcement officers to investigate the situation.
Orange County Sheriff's Department tweeted details about the shooting at 1:29 p.m.
SkyFOX video showed paramedics at 1:40 p.m. giving medical attention to one person in the middle of the road, but the person was pronounced dead.
It was not immediately clear which department the deputy involved in the shooting was employed.
The circumstances involving what crime the unidentified suspect committed was not immediately released.
All lanes on I-5 were reopened by 1:45 p.m., although the Las Pulgas Road exit remained closed to allow law enforcement to investigate.
