SAN DIEGO – Dozens of law enforcement officers were investigating a fatal shooting involving an Orange County deputy Tuesday at a Camp Pendleton exit ramp, authorities said.

A man walked up to a deputy, who had pulled over another driver at the Las Pulgas Road exit near Interstate 5, and said he committed a crime and was armed with a weapon, according the Highway Patrol.

The deputy requested "backup" and units from various agencies.

Orange County Sheriff's deputies, along with California Highway Patrol and Border Patrol agents, arrived to location around 1:15 p.m. to assist in the investigation.

CHP temporarily halted traffic on southbound I-5 near Las Pulgas Road to allow law enforcement officers to investigate the situation.

Orange County Sheriff's Department tweeted details about the shooting at 1:29 p.m.

SkyFOX video showed paramedics at 1:40 p.m. giving medical attention to one person in the middle of the road, but the person was pronounced dead.

It was not immediately clear which department the deputy involved in the shooting was employed.

The circumstances involving what crime the unidentified suspect committed was not immediately released.

All lanes on I-5 were reopened by 1:45 p.m., although the Las Pulgas Road exit remained closed to allow law enforcement to investigate.

  • Wild wild west. Unarmed mentally ill man shot by the sheriff

This is sick! Sheriffs department responded to a known mental illness call and killed a sick man. When is anyone going to step up and hold the sheriffs department accountable for their unprofessional and murderous conduct? It’s been said before that in spite of all the training they are given that there is inadequate procedures and training that would defuse a mental illness incident rather than ending it with a bullet. Can’t wait to see the cost of this lawsuit!

Ya they are not showing the 30+ US MARINES that had M16’s pointed at him too! I was on the FWY with my family. This is all a lie!! This is a cover up story. There is no way they needed Military, Boarder Patrol, CHP, & Sheriff’s for 1 man!! Why didn’t they taze him?? Gun happy egos! The Marines had guns drawn on a civilian!! PAID MURDERS!!

I assure you that US Marines are not murderers. Your statement is uncalled for and ridiculous. There certainly was not thirty plus Marines pointing M16s at the civilian, who was mentally ill and clearly dangerous.
