EL CAJON, Calif. -- Emergency repairs to a pothole along Interstate 8 in El Cajon snarled morning traffic Friday and prompted the closure of two westbound lanes.

The 5-foot hole was initially filled with concrete, but it failed to set correctly and sent chunks of cement onto the Marshall Avenue undercrossing below, Officer Robert Catano said.

Authorities closed the two right westbound lanes shortly after the roadway debris was reported around 6:10 a.m. because of concerns that the overpass' structure was jeopardized, according to the CHP's online incident log.

Caltrans officials said the agency's traffic cameras showed slowing along the freeway near Johnson Avenue and on southbound state Route 67 to westbound Interstate 8.
