Ocean Beach man dies while BASE jumping in Rio
SAN DIEGO – A professional wingsuit pilot from Ocean Beach died in a BASE jumping accident in Rio de Janerio on Friday.
Fernando Goncalves was killed diving off the 2,700-foot granite mountain known as Pedra de Gavea in Brazil, his friend John Leming told the Union Tribune. A gust of wind could have played a factor in the accident.
The 36-year-old was a professional BASE jumper, skydiver and wingsuit pilot and worked at Sky-dive San Diego in Jamul, according to Leming. He was hired as a parachute rigger for the local company.
Friends of Goncalves set up an online fundraiser for funeral costs and to return his body to his family. According to the GoFundMe page, money raised in excess of $3000 would go to support his teenaged daughter Isabela.
Base Jump XTreme posted a video in January of Goncalves during a wingsuit jump. The post did not show when or where the video was recorded.
