The ceremony, held Friday, honored Vice Admiral Nora Tyson who takes over the Navy’s Third Fleet, leading naval forces in the Eastern Pacific from the West Coast of North America to the International Date Line.
Vice Admiral Tyson takes over for Vice Admiral Kenny Floyd. Vice Admiral Floyd gave 35 years of service, among his many accomplishments, participating in Operation Desert Storm.
“I hope that young women and men look to me and [Floyd] and know they have the opportunity to become a Fleet Commander one day, regardless of their background…to say I’m filling big shoes would be an understatement,” said Vice Adm. Tyson.
Among her work, Tyson led the USS George H.W. Bush Strike Group on its first deployment. She headed the Navy’s efforts on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and deployed twice for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Now, she’s the first woman to lead a Fleet.
