PALA, Calif. — A pedestrian who was struck and killed after jumping into traffic traveling along state Route 76 near Pala was identified Tuesday as a 59- year-old transient man.

Michael Alan Lewis was struck by a Honda CRV in the eastbound highway lanes near Bodie Boulevard around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office. Witnesses told the California Highway Patrol Lewis jumped into oncoming traffic multiple times before the fatal crash.

Authorities said the CRV’s 23-year-old driver saw the victim but could not avoid him. She called for help from Harrah’s Resort Southern California about seven miles away in Valley Center.

Responding medics attempted to revive Lewis, but he died at the scene, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said.
