CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A shooting outside a hotel near Sweetwater County Park left a man hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

The gunfire in the 100 block of Bonita Street in Chula Vista was reported shortly before 4 p.m., according to police.

Officers arrived to find evidence, including broken glass, that a car had been fired upon in a parking lot behind La Quinta Inn, but no victim or damaged vehicle was present, Lt. Phil Collum said.

Witnesses described seeing the pistol-wielding shooter, a man in white shorts and a white shirt, running off into a nearby vacant lot. Officers searched the field and surrounding areas with service dogs and helicopters but were unable to find him.

Police eventually received word that a man had arrived at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center for treatment of gunshots to his abdomen and one of his arms.

The 30-year-old victim, who was in stable condition, confirmed that he had been wounded behind the hotel where the gunfire had been reported earlier in the afternoon.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.
