LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Dozens of paddlers braved the evening surf Tuesday in La Jolla to remember a 30-year-old skydiving instructor who died last month.

Andrei Penz was killed after his brand-new parachute folded over 100 feet above the ground.

Friends and family remembered Penz as a true adventurer and friend who lived life to the fullest.

“He brought happiness where ever he was,” said Jorge Paulo, a close friend of Penz. Colleagues revered his abilities in the air and said what happened was a complete anomaly.

Many in the skydiving community said Penz was one of the most experienced skydivers around, claiming as many as 1,500 jumps just last year alone.

Friends said the only thing thing that comforts them is knowing Penz lived several lifetimes in his 30 years of adventures.
