SAN DIEGO – More than 50 children were evacuated on the side of a San Diego freeway Monday morning when the bus taking them to Christian camp caught fire.

The bus from Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove had just left the church and was headed north on Interstate 15 near University Avenue when the driver noticed black smoke coming from the rear of the bus. The driver pulled over on the freeway and extinguished flames coming from one of the wheel wells while adult chaperones helped the children get off the bus safely.

The bus was taking the children, ages 9 to 13, to the Ironwood Christian Camp in Newberry Springs near Barstow.

The church sent another bus to pick up the children and they resumed their trip to the camp shortly after 9:30 a.m.
