SAN DIEGO – On Tuesday, one year after the death of Padres legend Tony Gwynn, officials announced a memorial event to honor Mr. Padre.

Gwynn starred at San Diego State University then spent his entire 20-year Hall of Fame career in San Diego.

He died following a long battle with cancer believed to have been caused by chewing tobacco.

Gwynn’s legacy will live on in the form of a special tournament to be held early next year at PETCO Park in his honor, it was announced Tuesday.

The tournament will feature San Diego State University, University of San Diego and six other schools. The proceeds will benefit the Tony and Alicia Gwynn foundation.
