SAN DIEGO – Police were searching for the thieves responsible for attempting to rip out an ATM from a Santee Walgreens Tuesday morning.

The burglary attempt occurred around 4:40 a.m. at the Walgreens at 9305 Mission Gorge Road. A red pickup truck was seen with a chain attached from its bumper to the ATM, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses called 911 but the burglars had already driven off when deputies arrived. The thieves managed to shear the ATM into two pieces during the burglary attempt, but they were unsuccessful in pulling it from the store. The chain used was left at the scene.

The attempt also caused heavy damage to the Walgreens’ front door. Deputies were looking at surveillance footage to try and identify the burglars.

This comes after thieves made a similar failed robbery attempt on June 3rd at a CVS Pharmacy in Rancho Penasquitos. The truck used in that burglary attempt was later found abandoned on the side of the road.

It was not confirmed if the two burglary attempts were connected.
