CARLSBAD, Calif. – A landscaper was hospitalized Friday after he was beaten with a pistol during a robbery on a quiet residential street in Carlsbad, authorities said.

The violent attack happened at around 5:30 a.m. on Canyon Street near Carlsbad High School, police said. Two landscapers were parked in their truck waiting to begin work at a home in the neighborhood when a small black sedan pulled up and two men with guns got out, according to investigators. They forced the landscapers to give them their wallets and cell phones.

At some point, one of the landscapers tried to resist and one of the robbers pistol-whipped him, police said. The robbers loaded some of the landscapers' tools into the sedan and drove off.

The injured landscaper was taken to Tri City Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries

Police said the robbery was particularly brazen because the criminals assaulted their victims on a street in a residential neighborhood where a number of residents could have witnessed the crime.
