Big Bay Boom: Celebrating those who protect our freedom

San Diego’s biggest fireworks display is just two weeks away. As we prepare to celebrate our country’s birthday, now is a good time to give thanks for our freedom and remember the service men and women who protect it.

The Big Bay Boom helps support the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of service members and their families in mind, body and spirit. More than 45,000 troops and their families took advantage of the Y’s many programs last year.

One of the ways the Armed Services YMCA helps military families is by offering educational and recreation programs for the children of troops, including:

  • Moms & Tots, family bonding through songs, stories and arts & crafts;
  • Camp Hero, an exciting day camp that encourages kids to challenge themselves through group activities and field trips;
  • Operation Kid Comfort, programs to help kids cope with the stresses of a parent’s deployment;
  • Operation Hero, an afterschool program focusing on skills and leadership development for children of active duty service members;
  • Annual Father-Daughter Dance, father-daughter bonding at a formal gala event.
