SAN DIEGO – The West Nimitz entrance to the San Diego Naval Base was shut down Monday night after a police chase ended at the gate, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The driver of a white Lincoln Navigator refused to stop after police tried to pull over the SUV and led police on a chase that eventually ended when it crashed into a security gate at the Naval base on East Harbor Drive and 32nd Street at around 9:00 p.m.

Police arrested the driver and a passenger and found ammunition in the driver’s pocket.

It was unclear why police initially tried to pull the driver over. He faces felony charges for evading arrest.

The incident is not expected to affect traffic getting onto base Tuesday morning.
