SAN MARCOS, Calif.-- An elderly man killed his wife before turning his gun on himself Monday at a San Marcos trailer park, deputies said.

Sheriffs investigators went to the trailer park in the 1100 block of East Barham Drive after receiving a call from a man at around 3:40 p.m. , San Diego County Sheriff's Department Lt. John Maryon said. The man said he had just killed his wife and was going to shoot himself, Maryon said.

Deputies rushed to the scene and surrounded a mobile home. A sheriff's helicopter used a loudspeaker to tell residents to remain in their homes, and SWAT officers spent an hour trying to contact the man inside. After two hours SWAT officers threw concussion grenades into the home. When there was no response, they entered the mobile home and found the bodies of an 80-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman.

Neighbors told FOX 5 they believe it was a mercy killing.

“(The wife) was in real bad shape. She had cancer and diabetes, so that’s what I think happened,” said trailer park resident Frank Clark.

The names of the couple were being withheld until kin has been notified.
