CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Four people were in jail and another was on the loose after leading police on a chase in a rental van through Chula Vista Monday night, police said.

The chase started when white U-Haul van was spotted driving with its lights out. The vehicle matched the description of a suspicious van that had been reported driving around several businesses. The driver sped off and ran through a red light at Howard Avenue.

The van’s lights remained off during the chase. It eventually hit a telephone pole and crashed into some bushes on a dead-end street. Five people jumped out of the car and scattered, four of whom were quickly arrested. Police were still searching for the fifth person in the van.

One person in the van had a warrant out for their arrest, but otherwise police found no evidence of criminal activity in the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the location of the fifth person is asked to call police.
