DEL MAR, Calif. -- A Los Angeles woman hit by a bicycle in Del Mar was hospitalized Sunday in a trauma ward with a head injury, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

The victim, 68, was legally walking with her husband across the intersection of Camino Del Mar and Border Avenue at 1:35 p.m. when she was hit and lifted into the air by a bicycle being ridden in its designated lane, authorities said.

The left side of the woman's head hit the asphalt and she was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment.

The couple was visiting from El Segundo, Calif. and on their way to the Brigantine Restaurant, police said.

We don’t really have enough information from the story to know what happened. I would guess that the bicyclist was travelling north, since that’s downhill and bicyclists can go fast that way. They tend to go much slower south, since it’s uphill in that direction near that intersection and so it would be easier to avoid a collision and less severe even if one happened.

I am inclined to blame the bicyclist but it is possible that the pedestrian moved into the bicyclist’s path at the last second without warning. I once had a pedestrian step into a bike lane in front of me without looking. It’s rare but it can and sometimes does happen.
