SAN DIEGO – A man died after he was shot by a deputy Wednesday evening on a back country road near Alpine.

The shooting occurred in the 3600 block of Emmanuel Way in the Japatul Valley area, according to Cal Fire.

Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a suicidal mentally ill man. When deputies arrived, the man reportedly tried to attack a deputy with a screwdriver.

"The male had planned an attack on a deputy using a screwdriver, forcing the deputy to shoot him, or he would overdose on narcotics," Sheriff's Lt. John Maryon said.

The deputy shot the man with a Taser before shoot him with a gun.

At least a dozen San Diego County Sheriff's Department patrol cars and Cal Fire crews responded to the scene.

Residents in the area who were unable to get inside their homes were assisted by Red Cross.

Does anyone at Fox 5 proof read their material? It’s embarrassing to see the English language butchered so regularly by “professional” journalists. As reported by Fox 5 San Diego: “The deputy shot the man with a Taser before shoot him with a gun.” Great job as always! I have to say: I am entertained!
