SAN DIEGO - Two people were in jail Thursday morning a break-in at a Rite Aid in Lakeside and a high-speed chase that ended in Rancho San Diego, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said.

A burglary alarm sounded at the Rite Aid at 9532 Wintergardens Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Deputies saw a silver SUV behind the store when they arrived, causing a man and a woman to jump into the vehicle and speed off. The driver stopped for police in the 9500 block of Winter Gardens, but the driver took off again before deputies could make contact.

He led deputies on a high-speed pursuit, driving the wrong way along freeways at speeds of 100 miles per hour through Lakeside, El Cajon, and into Rancho San Diego. Sheriff's deputies eventually caught up to the burglars after about ten minutes on Vista de la Valle Road in Rancho San Diego.

They found 13 bottles of Crown Royal whiskey and five cartons of cigarettes in the SUV, all of which were returned to the Rite Aid from which they were stolen.

The driver, 23-year-old Shemal Taha, and his 27-year-old passenger, Nicole Gonzalez, were arrested. They face charges for conspiracy, commercial burglary, and felony evading arrest.
