RANCHO SANTA FE — Rancho Santa Fe Water officials want customers to cut more of their water use than the state mandated 36%.

Members of the water district mulled over enhancing the state’s mandate to cut water to 45%.

They’re also considering asking property owners to cut their lawn watering by 50%.

Those who fail to meet these restrictions would face fines or penalties.

Residents who showed up at the meeting said they’ll do what they can but think they’re being treated unfairly.

“This community sticks together, these people aren’t all a bunch of rich greedy people up here using water,” said Tim Hamilton.

The Rancho Santa Fe Water Board, which also supplies water to Solana Beach and Fairbanks, will make a final decision on water cuts later this month.

The state’s ordered cuts must be met by June first.
