OTAY MESA, Calif. – Officers helped free a man they found hidden in a compartment specially built under the backseat of a pickup truck, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said.

A woman driving a white 1998 Dodge pickup truck was stopped at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Saturday at 3 a.m. and was required to get further inspection of her vehicle, authorities said.

CBP officers inspecting the 48-year-old woman’s truck and found the man hiding under the rear seat.  They were able to get the 36-year-old Mexican man, suspected of attempting to enter the U.S. illegally, out of the after-market compartment, officers said.

Both the man and woman were arrested. The woman faces federal charges.
