SD councilwoman plans to retire at end of term
SAN DIEGO – San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald, who has been undergoing treatment for breast cancer, will not seek re-election, a staffer confirmed Tuesday.
Emerald, a Democrat, has been representing District 9 since 2008. Her district includes City Heights, Kensington, Talmadge and areas around San Diego State University.
The former longtime TV reporter has been open about her cancer treatments since being diagnosed last summer. Her doctors apparently told her is has an excellent prognosis.
Emerald was eligible for a third term, which councilmembers are typically limited to two four-year terms, after she switched districts three years ago. She originally represented District 7.
The councilwoman is expected to officially announce her retirement plans next week. the staffer told FOX 5.
