SAN DIEGO -- More than 45,000 fans crammed into Petco Park Thursday for the Padres home opener.

For the first time in a very long time, fans have one thing in common: hope.

"It's just so much fun, there's enthusiasm, we have hope," said long-time Padres fan Louisa DeBarbera.

Unlike recent years, fans believe the team has a realistic shot at winning. It's all due to the team's off-season trades and signings of named players.

"We for a long time have been struggling here in San Diego. Let's go Padres!" said DeBarbera.

Throughout Petco Park, fans kept talking about the possibilities.

"It's awesome man, you know we have one of the best teams in the league, we just want to get to the playoffs, after that whatever, cherry on top," said Armando Abundis, another long-time Padres fan.
